Are Juul's The New Cool?


The newest thing on the market for the cool teens is the Juul. The Juul is an electronic cigarette that contains nicotine. One pod is approximately equal to one pack of cigarettes. The market for Juuls targets adults, but it has become easily accessible for kids to get their hands on one if they want to.

Juul's have become popular in media and can be seen in many photos of celebrities, such as Bella Hadid and Katy Perry. Although they are just as bad for you as a normal cigarette one reason why I think people have switched over to E-cigs are due to their aesthetic look. This connects to need for aesthetic sensation in consumers. The slick look of a Juul is more appealing than a cigarette that has gained the reputation of being bad for you, which they are. Because they are shown off as cool, it could be what's attracting the younger generation to start using them. 

Advertisements for Juul's during their early campaign did not make it clear that it was for adults. In fact it could be seen as almost targeting teens in a way. In the ads they use young actors with music and clothing that seemed to be more teen oriented. Another way the company promoted their product was through fruit flavored pods. I think this is where they went wrong. The fact that they make the nicotine smell nice and fruity compared to what an actual cigarette smells like can trick young teens into thinking that because it smells and taste good it can't be bad for you. So much so that the FDA actually banned the sale of fruit flavored pod in certain stores.
