The Hype Around Coachella

This back to back weekend music festival just wrapped up its last performance of 2019 this past Sunday. Over the past couple of years the festival has gained the title of “basic”. Nowadays it seems like people don’t go to Coachella for the music, rater for the "clout" and for the outfits. Popular social media influencers seem to always post about how glamorous their lives are at Coachella weekend. It's almost as if you don't go you're irrelevant. They share pictures of their expensive outfits and videos of them dancing about with friends. These posts have been popular over that past few weeks because that's mostly what people want to see because of how glamorous Coachella is portrayed.
But what hasn't been brought up much is the owner of Coachella. Rumors have been circulating for the
past couple of years that he donates to Anti-abortion, Anti-gay, and Pro-gun Republican candidates. It's
not positive that any of this is true but after all the talk in the media the owner, Philip Anschutz responded
to Rolling Stones magazine saying he, "Supports the rights of all people without regard to sexual orientation."
Following this announcement he said he'd cease to donating more to the Anti-Gay groups. But he made no
comment about all the other organizations he's been accused of contributing to.

Philip Anschutz

People seem to be angry that artists would still participate in such a festival with all the rumors that had been going around that may or not be true. But the people that attend the festival don't seem to mind, or they just ignore the fact. But at the end of the day, people believe what they believe and we can't change that. We can just choose to support it or not.

  1. I find it interesting how many of the recent Coachella performers and attendees are a part of the LGBTQ community or are allies. Considering that this information on the owner of Coachella's donations have been circulating for over a year now, I am surprised that less people have boycotted the event entirely. I am aware that many artists and participants in this festival attend simply for the media exposure, brand deals, and the ability to say that they went. With this in mind, I am hoping that the majority of attendees whom have heard of these rumors are aware of whom and what they are affiliated with, and if not that these rumors cease to be true.

  2. I agree with your statement that many people that go to Coachella ignore the fact that Philip donates to anti-abortion, anti-gay, etc foundations and use Coachella for their personal liking. Also, I'm sure many people aren't event aware of these rumors because they are hidden and don't want to get out. This can also apply to the ethics universal disclosure test because if everyone found out these donations were being made, there would probably be a lot more controversy about the festival. I have seen many people from the LGBTQ community that attend Coachella, which makes me question if they know about these rumors and ignore them.
